Why Your Company Needs Safety Videos

Let’s be honest. Any industrial company, whether you’re in fossil fuels or clean energy, wants that sign on that fence that reads ‘417 Days Since a Recordable Incident’. But what is the difference between the companies that have that sign and the ones with the smudged dry-erase marks and a ‘0’ where ‘417’ should be? In most cases, it’s their investment in videos that teach and train their employees how to be safe.

Don’t get us wrong, we’ve got nothing against power point presentations, tri-fold brochures and posters on the wall with catch phrases about safety. But they don’t really work. What’s truly effective is showing employees site-specific safety videos that not only informs but entertains. Yep, that’s right, entertains. Why is that important? Because if an employee is entertained by the images, the percentage of them retaining the information skyrockets. If they retain the information, they’re much more likely to remember the right thing to do in the right moment, keeping themselves and those around them safer.

You’ll notice we said ‘site-specific’ in that previous paragraph. Why is that important? Because, having worked in the field myself as a welder’s helper when I was a college kid, I remember having to watch orientation videos that were cookie cutter out of some production house 2,000 miles away. The actor had high water jeans and a shiny new hard hat, obviating that he had probably never had a real job on site in his life. My focus stayed on that, laughing internally, and I completely lost focus, missing the points being made on the video. Producing your video on site not only gives your employees an environment they will relate to, but the situations they see on screen are the authentic locations they’ll see while in the field.

So, in short, if you want that sign on your fence to reach triple, even quadruple digits, it’s time to invest in high-quality, site-specific safety and training videos. Not only will that sign impress people, imagine all the employees that you’ll be keeping safe as part of the bargain.
